Abstract
Climate change triggers feedback effects such as ocean ice melting, rising ocean temperatures and ocean acidification, which cascade through the energy system and impact the marine economy. Current research has yet to fully capture these complex effects, especially in terms of assessing the sustainability of the marine economy. This paper innovatively constructs an integrated assessment modeling approach to evaluate the dynamic impacts of climate change on marine energy systems and the marine economy. By coupling climate, energy, and economic models, we explore how climate change influences both emerging marine industries and traditional high-pollution marine sectors. The model incorporates key factors such as technological advancements, economic policies, and environmental impacts, particularly within the marine sector, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the transition from traditional industries to innovative, low-carbon sectors. Multiple climate scenarios are considered using different SSP/RCP combinations to evaluate the performance of marine energy and economic systems under varying degrees of climate change. The results highlight the potential for marine renewable energy to drive sustainable economic growth while mitigating carbon emissions. The restructuring of traditional marine industries is key to achieving sustainable development in the marine economy, requiring investment in emerging industries and technologies to enhance the overall eco-friendliness of the marine economy. Furthermore, we evaluate different policy interventions, including carbon pricing and subsidies, to accelerate the transition towards a greener marine economy. This integrated assessment modeling framework offers valuable insights into policy design, aiding in the development of strategies to promote low-carbon marine economic transitions in the face of climate change.
