Interaction between offshore wind farm and the dynamic environment: from the small scale to large scale
Offshore wind farm, turbine wake, tropical cyclone, parameterization
Session 46 - Oceanic Mesoscale and Submesoscale Processes: Characteristics, Dynamics & Parameterizations
Abstract Accepted
The impact of rainfall on turbine wakes has been assessed, which is significant for improving power generation forecasts in wind farms. The impact of turbine wakes on the flight stability of birds has been simulated, revealing the distribution of the impact on bird flight in different regions of the wake. It has been found that tropical depressions in the early autumn over the Beibu Gulf are intensified by the presence of wind farms in the northern South China Sea, with the mountainous terrain of Hainan Island amplifying the effects downstream of the wind farm. Offshore wind farms in the northeastern South China Sea intensify the autumn tropical cyclone, mainly due to the reduced transport of cold water upstream associated with the wind speed deficit, and the increase in surface pressure. A parameterization scheme for floating wind farms has been proposed, providing conditions for simulating floating wind farms in atmospheric models in the future.
