Based on model simulations and satellite data, this work examines the intraseasonal variability in the Indonesian waters. The results show that the intraseasonal variability of SSH is very apparent in the western Java and the Banda Sea, which also exhibits remarkable seasonal differences, weaker in summer and autumn but much stronger in winter and spring. Preliminary analysis indicates that the intraseasonal variability of SSH in the coastal region of western Java and the Banda Sea may be related to wind stress, particularly the zonal wind stress. The northwesterly wind anomaly generates an eastward current that promotes intraseasonal Kelvin waves from the equatorial Indian Ocean to the coast of western Java, thereby causing an increase in SSH. Whether this signal can propagate into the Banda Sea and whether the intraseasonal variability of SSH in the Banda Sea is driven by local effects remain to be investigated in further research.
